Dillinger is launching operation of yet another world first in its rolling mill today with its new eddy current testing system. Henceforth, with this unique system eddy current will be used to automatically inspect the surface of heavy plate for localized hard spots.

The Dillinger Group – Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) with its subsidiaries performed well in 2017 – in view of persisting difficult conditions on the heavy plate market. Capacity utilization at the plants was very good across all phases of production. Production significantly exceeded that of the previous year – and thus reached the highest level of the last five years. Shipments also increased significantly.

At the specialist trade fair “Wire”, which starts in Düsseldorf on April 16th, Saarstahl AG, leader in the manufacture of wire and bar steel, will present itself for the first time together with its new partner Mapudo GmbH, an independent online platform for the purchase and sale of steel and NE metals. SHS Ventures, the venture capital company of the Saarland’s steel industry, acquired a share in Mapudo GmbH in 2016.

The Saarstahl Group looks back on an overall successful business year 2017. During this period, the facilities for bar steel and wire rod had very good capacity utilization throughout and record quantities could be achieved at all locations. Shipping volumes increased yet again to a higher level than the previous year.

Following the announcement of Dr. Michael Müller (63) and Fred Metzken (62) at the beginning of February that they are going to withdraw from the operative business as of 31 August 2018, the committees of the Supervisory Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co KGaA (SHS), Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger), DHS – Dillinger Hütte Saarstahl AG (DHS) and Saarstahl AG held consultations regarding the succession and passed the corresponding resolutions in their respective meetings on 8th and 9th March. At SHS level, Tim Hartmann (49) was appointed as Chairman of the Management Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar with effect from 1 September 2018 for a period of 5 years. Mr Hartmann will also take on responsibility for Finance. Furthermore, it was resolved to reappoint Dr. Bernd Münnich and Peter Schweda as Members of the Management Board with effect from 1 January 2019.

Dr. Michael Müller and Fred Metzken informed the Board of Trustees of the Montan-Stiftung-Saar trust in its first meeting of the year at the beginning of February that they will retire from the operative business in the course of 2018. Dr. Michael Müller will therefore resign from the post of Chairman of the Management Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) and Fred Metzken from the post of Spokesman for the Management Board of Dillinger and Saarstahl and of Member of the Management Board of SHS as of 31.08.2018.

In a meeting which took place today, the Supervisory Board of Saarstahl AG agreed to invest an amount of 100 million euros in a new continuous casting plant. The company operates a total of four continuous casting plants in the steelmaking plant. Here, hot liquid metal is cast into so-called billets. This primary material is then further processed in the rolling mills. The new five-strand plant with the short name S1 will replace an existing plant. The construction work will start in spring 2018 and commissioning of the plant is planned for the end of 2019.

The Dillinger Group – Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) together with its subsidiaries – was able to increase its production and sales volumes in 2016 compared to the previous year under challenging economic conditions and despite the three-month relining procedure on blast furnace 4. The heavy plate market remained fiercely competitive in 2016, however, and continued to be characterized by high overcapacities and low revenues.

Zensor has developed an integrated solution that provides predictive maintenance for large, stationary parts of technical plants and infrastructure.

On behalf of Saarland’s steel industry, SHS Ventures, a venture capital company, has acquired a stake in Mapudo GmbH, an independent trading platform for steel traders based in Düsseldorf. The investment in the single digit million range has taken place along with two other investors, the NRW.Bank and HR Ventures, in order to finance Mapudo’s growth.

The steel foundation of the Saarland “Stahlstiftung Saarland” is enabling young people to take part in an educational programme to prepare them for their career start. For the first time, refugees and young Germans are participating in a project together. The training locations are the training facilities of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG.

An official welcome marked the launch of the new year of training, during which the new trainees were welcomed by their future trainers, Works Council representatives, youth representatives and the Labor Director.

Despite highly problematic market conditions, the Dillinger Hütte Group (Dillinger Hütte and its subsidiaries) was able to increase its production and sales volumes in 2014 compared to the previous year and concluded the financial year with a profit. “The Dillinger Hütte Group has gotten out of the red and has improved its EBIT and EBITDA by more than € 250 million compared to the previous year. This is the result of considerable cost cutting and a significant enhancement of competitiveness,” Dillinger Hütte Chief Executive Officer Dr. Karlheinz Blessing said during the annual press conference.

The Saarstahl Group closed the business year 2014 with significantly better figures in comparison with the previous year. In particular, the sales volume for bar steel and wire rod was on a high level while the revenue situation remained below expectations. At this year's annual press conference, CEO Dr. Karlheinz Blessing stated that “In spite of adverse market conditions, Saarstahl achieved tangible profits in 2014. This was the result of excellent performance across all divisions of the company combined with considerable internal improvement processes.”

Völklingen, 6th June 2014 – After the major investment projects of the previous years, the most recent of which was the building of the new secondary metallurgy in the steelmaking plant, Saarstahl is continuing its modernisation programme with further investments in the rolling mills in Völklingen and Burbach. The CEO of Saarstahl, Dr Karlheinz Blessing commented on the investments “With these next phases of investment, we are aiming to strengthen strategically important products for the automotive industry and mechanical engineering branches and to be more flexible in reacting to the market”. From 2008 until today, Saarstahl (including Saarschmiede) will thus have invested around 1.1 billion euros.
