Saving energy and increasing efficiency with ESTA

The energy efficiency network ESTA (“Energieeffizienz mit Stahl”) has posted positive results after its three-year duration: Saarstahl, Dillinger and the affiliated companies achieved energy savings of roughly 29,500 megawatt hours per year. This amounts to an annual reduction of carbon emissions of approx. 11,750 metric tons.

Supervisory Board lays groundwork for the future – identical executive management for SHS, Dillinger and Saarstahl

As part of the ongoing strategy process, the Supervisory Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) decided at its meeting yesterday in favor of identical staffing for the management of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar as well as that of the Boards of Directors of Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG. Dr. Günter Luxenburger of Dillinger, and Dr. Klaus Richter of Saarstahl, both Sales Directors for their respective companies, were appointed as additional Managing Directors of SHS, effective 1 July 2020. The two Sales Directors will continue to perform their functions at Dillinger and Saarstahl, respectively. As of 1 July 2020, the SHS Board of Management will therefore consist of Tim Hartmann, Chairman; Martin Baues; Jörg Disteldorf (as the designated successor to Peter Schweda); Dr. Günter Luxenburger; and Dr. Klaus Richter.

Peter Schweda (62) is resigning and retiring from his post as Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG, and as a Managing Director of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar, with effect from 30 June 2020. Schweda has been Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director of Dillinger and Saarstahl since 2011 and a member of the Board of Management of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar since 2016.

Saarland’s steel industry welcomes 159 new trainees

The new training year is beginning: A total of 159 young people start their careers today at Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke. At Saarstahl, 76 trainees are beginning a new phase of their lives: 68 in technical and industrial fields and 8 in business-related fields. Dillinger has recruited 83 trainees this year, with 78 of them in technical and industrial fields and 5 in business-related fields. The group includes 22 women and 12 participants in the intercultural BEST 2.0 career-entry program.⃰ Saarland’s steel industry now employs 563 trainees (Dillinger: 273; Saarstahl: 290) across all training years.

Key figures for the 2018 financial year of the Dillinger Group

For the Dillinger Group – Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) with its subsidiaries – the subdued outlook for 2018 has been confirmed: Demand in some key customer segments – such as the line pipe and the offshore wind power market – declined in 2018 but was partially offset by higher sales of normal plate in a wide variety of segments. Overall plant capacity utilization was good, although production and shipment volumes were unable to match the high level of the previous year.

100 million euros investment at Saarstahl

Work to complete the new continuous casting system S1 is on schedule

Since the middle of November 2017, construction work on the new continuous casting system S1 in the steel plant of Saarstahl has been running at full speed. The project represents a total investment of 100 million euros and requires that all tasks be coordinated with the greatest precision to ensure that the system can go into operation according to schedule at the end of 2019.

Tim Hartmann is appointed as the new Chairman of the Management Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dillinger and Saarstahl – Further personnel-related decisions have been taken

Following the announcement of Dr. Michael Müller (63) and Fred Metzken (62) at the beginning of February that they are going to withdraw from the operative business as of 31 August 2018, the committees of the Supervisory Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co KGaA (SHS), Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger), DHS – Dillinger Hütte Saarstahl AG (DHS) and Saarstahl AG held consultations regarding the succession and passed the corresponding resolutions in their respective meetings on 8th and 9th March. At SHS level, Tim Hartmann (49) was appointed as Chairman of the Management Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar with effect from 1 September 2018 for a period of 5 years. Mr Hartmann will also take on responsibility for Finance. Furthermore, it was resolved to reappoint Dr. Bernd Münnich and Peter Schweda as Members of the Management Board with effect from 1 January 2019.

139 new trainees join Saarland’s steel industry

A group of 139 young people started their working lives today with Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger). The group includes 15 women and 17 participants in the intercultural BEST 2.0 career-entry program.⃰ At Saarstahl, 73 trainees are beginning a new phase of their lives: 67 in technical and industrial fields and 6 in business-related fields. Dillinger is employing 66 trainees this year, including 62 in technical and industrial fields and four in business-related fields. Saarland’s steel industry currently employs a total of 501 trainees when all class years are combined (Dillinger: 241; Saarstahl: 260).

Energy efficiency with steel: Verband der Saarhütten and Saarland’s steel industry launch the ESTA energy efficiency network

“500 new energy efficiency networks by 2020” – that was the goal set by Germany’s federal government in December 2014 in an agreement with industry and trade associations including the Federation of German Steel Industry (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl). With the founding of the ESTA (Energieeffizienz mit STAhl) energy efficiency network on 1 June 2017, Saarland’s steel industry is actively supporting this government initiative. The goal is to further strengthen the already numerous activities aimed at reducing energy use.

The heavy plate market remained fiercely competitive in 2016, however, and continued to be characterized by high overcapacities and low revenues.

SHS Ventures, a venture capital company of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar and VSE, has acquired shares in Zensor, a Belgian service provider based in Brussels. Zensor has developed an integrated solution that provides predictive maintenance for large, stationary parts of technical plants and infrastructure.

For the first time, refugees and young Germans are participating in a project together. The training locations are the training facilities of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG.

An official welcome marked the launch of the new year of training, during which the new trainees were welcomed by their future trainers, Works Council representatives, youth representatives and the Labor Director. Saarland’s steel industry currently employs a total of 498 trainees when all class years are combined (Dillinger: 241; Saarstahl: 257).

The Saarstahl Group was able to conclude the business year 2015 with slightly positive results in spite of economic adversity and a difficult situation on the market. Above all, in the wire rod and bar steel sector, there was a high degree of capacity utilization in all facilities and shipping volumes could be maintained on the same high level as the previous year.

Key data for the 2014 financial year of the Dillinger Hütte Group

Despite highly problematic market conditions, the Dillinger Hütte Group (Dillinger Hütte and its subsidiaries) was able to increase its production and sales volumes in 2014 compared to the previous year and concluded the financial year with a profit. “The Dillinger Hütte Group has gotten out of the red and has improved its EBIT and EBITDA by more than € 250 million compared to the previous year. This is the result of considerable cost cutting and a significant enhancement of competitiveness,” Dillinger Hütte Chief Executive Officer Dr. Karlheinz Blessing said during the annual press conference.

Key Data for the Business Year 2014 for the Saarstahl Group

The Saarstahl Group closed the business year 2014 with significantly better figures in comparison with the previous year. In particular, the sales volume for bar steel and wire rod was on a high level while the revenue situation remained below expectations. At this year's annual press conference, CEO Dr. Karlheinz Blessing stated that “In spite of adverse market conditions, Saarstahl achieved tangible profits in 2014. This was the result of excellent performance across all divisions of the company combined with considerable internal improvement processes.”

Saarstahl Press Release: Saarstahl invests 46 million euros in modernisation of rolling mills

Völklingen, 6th June 2014 – After the major investment projects of the previous years, the most recent of which was the building of the new secondary metallurgy in the steelmaking plant, Saarstahl is continuing its modernisation programme with further investments in the rolling mills in Völklingen and Burbach. The CEO of Saarstahl, Dr Karlheinz Blessing commented on the investments “With these next phases of investment, we are aiming to strengthen strategically important products for the automotive industry and mechanical engineering branches and to be more flexible in reacting to the market”. From 2008 until today, Saarstahl (including Saarschmiede) will thus have invested around 1.1 billion euros.
