EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) and SHS – Stahl Holding Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA (SHS) have concluded a long-term, 50 megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) that will run for 15 years. The supply of green electricity enables SHS to sustainably transform the business activities of its companies Saarstahl and Dillinger and to reduce its own carbon emissions in future steel production.

More than 21,000 companies competed in this year’s ranking by the non-profit environmental protection organization.

During his visit to Saarland today, Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck announced decisive results for the gigantic decarbonization project, that is unparalleled in Germany and Europe. Accompanied by Minister President Anke Rehlinger and a crowd of cheering representatives of Dillinger and Saarstahl, Habeck announced planned funding totaling EUR 2.6 billion – subject to approval by EU competition authorities.

Dillingen/Rotterdam. SHS – Stahl Holding Saar GmbH & Co.KG (SHS) acquired Dillinger Hafen-Umschlagsgesellschaft mbH (DHUG) from HES International on 18 September 2023. The declared aim of the purchase is to further optimize the SHS supply chains. Following a strategic review, HES International decided that DHUG is better positioned to fit into the portfolio of SHS.

Environmental Product Declaration published for “Pure Steel+ Rail” products

Saarstahl Rail, a subsidiary of Saarstahl AG, published in August the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its “Pure Steel+ Rail” products. The EPD, which contains information about the environmental impact of a product, affirms Saarstahl Rail’s pioneering role in the mobility sector.

The earthquake disaster in the border region of Turkey and Syria as well as the impact on the people there are enormous and require targeted aid. The SHS Group wants to do its part to help the affected people and alleviate the need. The steel companies are therefore supporting the German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, DRK) and AWO International with an immediate donation of EUR 50,000 to each organization for their relief efforts.

Hyvolution: Industry partners and government representatives underline importance of a cross-border hydrogen economy

Paris, 02.02.2023. During the international trade fair Hyvolution, the Grande Region Hydrogen EEIG (GRH) association with partners from Saarland, Grand Est and Luxembourg presented its goal of building a cross-border hydrogen economy today in Paris. The association appealed to the invited politicians for their active support. Industrial specialist for hydrogen – that’s the name of a new vocational qualification that will be in demand in the future at SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar with the companies Dillinger and Saarstahl. The world of work and fields of activity will change fundamentally for employees when the largest employer in Saarland converts its traditional blast furnace route to more sustainable technologies. The Saarland Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar are supporting this transformation in the world of work by offering custom-tailored qualification programs. The first low-carbon steel is slated to be produced in Saarland in 2027. Qualification training is beginning in parallel with the planning of the plants.

CDP grants SHS Group “Supplier Engagement Leader” status

SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) and its companies Dillinger and Saarstahl achieved an overall B grade in the 2021 ratings for “Metal smelting, refining & forming” by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a global nonprofit environmental protection organization. SHS was included for the first time in the CDP’s “Supplier Engagement Leadership Board”.

Achieving the turnaround: Dillinger and Saarstahl significantly improve operating profit

• The Saarstahl and Dillinger Groups can look back on a successful 2021 financial year. • Net sales increased significantly: in the Dillinger Group from €1.645 billion to €2.281 billion and in the Saarstahl Group from €1.684 billion to €2.777 billion. • Dillinger Group closed the financial year with an EBITDA of €201.1 million and an EBIT of €80.1 million. The Saarstahl Group recorded an EBITDA of €281.5 million and an EBIT of €187.9 million. • The cost-cutting program initiated in 2019 has been implemented quickly and effectively. The final measures will be completed in 2022.

Dr. Günter Luxenburger (64) is resigning as planned and retiring from his position as Chief Sales Officer of Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and as Managing Director of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar, effective 31 March 2022. Dr. Luxenburger has been Chief Sales Officer of Dillinger since 2012 and a member of the Board of Management of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar since 2020.

Certified family friendly: Saarstahl and Dillinger awarded the Family-Friendly Company seal of quality

Dillinger and Saarstahl were honored with Saarland’s Family-Friendly Company seal of quality from saar.is. Ute Knerr, project manager of the Working and Living in Saarland service center (saar.is), presented the certificate to Joerg Disteldorf, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director at Dillinger and Saarstahl. State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jürgen Barke also accepted the invitation and congratulated the steel partners on receiving the award. Saarstahl was certified for the first time and Dillinger was recertified.

Stability for the future – 20 years of Montan-Stiftung-Saar

The Montan-Stiftung-Saar foundation was established on 7 September 2001 as part of the “Saarland iron and steelworks solution”. The aim of the foundation was to reorganize the ownership structure of the steel industry in Saarland in order to secure the long-term sustainability of the companies and jobs in the industry. The foundation has been a guarantor for the stability of the Saarland steel industry since 2001. In line with the purpose of the foundation, it has also become an integral part of the Saarland university landscape as a supporter of education and science.

Key figures for the 2020 financial year for Dillinger Group and Saarstahl Group

Energy consumption cut by 2,500,000 kWh per year!

Compared to its predecessor, the new tube gas storage facility on the premises of Saarstahl AG in Neunkirchen – “successor” to the gasometer that was dismantled in June of this year – saves the energy equivalent of roughly 600 Neunkirchen households per year, or 2,500,000 kWh.

Steel for green energy: Hornsea One offshore wind farm builds on heavy plate from Dillinger

With a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, the British offshore wind farm Hornsea One is one of the largest in the world and is seen as a trailblazer in the energy transition. The energy efficiency network ESTA (“Energieeffizienz mit Stahl”) has posted positive results after its three-year duration: Saarstahl, Dillinger and the affiliated companies achieved energy savings of roughly 29,500 megawatt hours per year. This amounts to an annual reduction of carbon emissions of approx. 11,750 metric tons.

As part of the ongoing strategy process, the Supervisory Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) decided at its meeting yesterday in favor of identical staffing for the management of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar as well as that of the Boards of Directors of Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG. Dr. Günter Luxenburger of Dillinger, and Dr. Klaus Richter of Saarstahl, both Sales Directors for their respective companies, were appointed as additional Managing Directors of SHS, effective 1 July 2020. The two Sales Directors will continue to perform their functions at Dillinger and Saarstahl, respectively. As of 1 July 2020, the SHS Board of Management will therefore consist of Tim Hartmann, Chairman; Martin Baues; Jörg Disteldorf (as the designated successor to Peter Schweda); Dr. Günter Luxenburger; and Dr. Klaus Richter.

The new training year is beginning: A total of 159 young people start their careers today at Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke. At Saarstahl, 76 trainees are beginning a new phase of their lives: 68 in technical and industrial fields and 8 in business-related fields. Dillinger has recruited 83 trainees this year, with 78 of them in technical and industrial fields and 5 in business-related fields. For the Dillinger Group – Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) with its subsidiaries – the subdued outlook for 2018 has been confirmed: Demand in some key customer segments – such as the line pipe and the offshore wind power market – declined in 2018 but was partially offset by higher sales of normal plate in a wide variety of segments. Overall plant capacity utilization was good, although production and shipment volumes were unable to match the high level of the previous year.

Since the middle of November 2017, construction work on the new continuous casting system S1 in the steel plant of Saarstahl has been running at full speed. Following the announcement of Dr. Michael Müller (63) and Fred Metzken (62) at the beginning of February that they are going to withdraw from the operative business as of 31 August 2018, the committees of the Supervisory Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co KGaA (SHS), Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger), DHS – Dillinger Hütte Saarstahl AG (DHS) and Saarstahl AG held consultations regarding the succession and passed the corresponding resolutions in their respective meetings on 8th and 9th March. At SHS level, Tim Hartmann (49) was appointed as Chairman of the Management Board of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar with effect from 1 September 2018 for a period of 5 years. Mr Hartmann will also take on responsibility for Finance. Furthermore, it was resolved to reappoint Dr. Bernd Münnich and Peter Schweda as Members of the Management Board with effect from 1 January 2019.

A group of 139 young people started their working lives today with Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger). The group includes 15 women and 17 participants in the intercultural BEST 2.0 career-entry program.⃰ At Saarstahl, 73 trainees are beginning a new phase of their lives: 67 in technical and industrial fields and 6 in business-related fields. Dillinger is employing 66 trainees this year, including 62 in technical and industrial fields and four in business-related fields. Saarland’s steel industry currently employs a total of 501 trainees when all class years are combined (Dillinger: 241; Saarstahl: 260).

Energy efficiency with steel: Verband der Saarhütten and Saarland’s steel industry launch the ESTA energy efficiency network

“500 new energy efficiency networks by 2020” – that was the goal set by Germany’s federal government in December 2014 in an agreement with industry and trade associations including the Federation of German Steel Industry (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl). With the founding of the ESTA (Energieeffizienz mit STAhl) energy efficiency network on 1 June 2017, Saarland’s steel industry is actively supporting this government initiative. The goal is to further strengthen the already numerous activities aimed at reducing energy use.

An official welcome marked the launch of the new year of training, during which the new trainees were welcomed by their future trainers, Works Council representatives, youth representatives and the Labor Director. Völklingen, 6th June 2014 – After the major investment projects of the previous years, the most recent of which was the building of the new secondary metallurgy in the steelmaking plant, Saarstahl is continuing its modernisation programme with further investments in the rolling mills in Völklingen and Burbach.
